On Friday, October 30, about 126 friends of Good Shepherd's Clothes Closet filled the Paradise Ballroom at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa for our second Nevada Day Dinner. It was a night of good food, Battle Born pride, and neighbors coming together around our 30th year of providing hope and dignity to those in need with free clothes.
A night to remember
Katey Roshetko of KOLO 8 opened the evening and set a warm, welcoming tone for the room. Sparks City Councilman Donald Abbott gave our keynote, sharing Nevada history and personal stories that stayed with many of us long after dessert. GSCC President Chaplain Chaz Blackburn joined me as co-emcee, and Copper Clover filled the room with live folk music. Thank you to Sloan and the Atlantis team, who made every detail of the evening run smoothly.
Hope & Dignity Awards
One of the most meaningful moments of the evening came when we presented the 2026 Hope & Dignity Awards. This award is our way of saying thank you to people whose care and commitment help us serve our neighbors.
This year we were honored to recognize:
Dr. Barry Frank
Robin Engelke
Mark & Sue Teachout
To each of our winners: thank you. Your kindness reaches people you may never meet, and it helps make the Closet a place where everyone is welcomed and treated with respect.
Thank you to our sponsors
Every table, every raffle basket, and every bag of clothing that goes out our door this year carries the support of the sponsors who made the Nevada Day Dinner happen. We are grateful to each of them.
Silver State Presenting Sponsor: Anonymous
Community Heritage Sponsors: KOLO 8 · TrustMasters · Atlantis Casino Resort Spa
Neighbor Sponsor: Helix Electric
Friends of the Closet: Renown Health · Sue Goodman · SilverSummit Health Plan · Wingfield Springs Vet Hospital
In-kind: Grocery Outlet (Spanish Springs), wine for the tables
Thank you as well to everyone who hosted a Table of 8, and to the local businesses who donated silent auction and raffle items.
What your support does
Every ticket, bid, and raffle entry helps provide free clothing, shoes, hygiene items, and essentials to the roughly 800 neighbors who shop at the Closet each month. As the weather turns colder, that help matters more than ever.
Keep the momentum going
If you missed the dinner, there are still plenty of ways to stand with your neighbors this season. You can donate gently used clothing during our donation hours, make a gift online, or email info@gsccreno.org to ask about volunteering.
Save the date: Nevada Day Dinner 2027 is Friday, October 29, 2027 at the Atlantis. We hope to see you there.
Thank you for making our second Nevada Day Dinner such a meaningful night. We are already looking forward to the next one.
With gratitude,
Dave McLaughlin
